“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”    (Mark 16:15).

Pastor Bob preaches Sunday morning, and also in the eve,
Bringing us God’s message, for all who will receive.
And again on Wednesday night, with those who show up there,
Bob’s right there in the middle, amidst each other’s prayers.

While many modern churches, dropped their meeting Sunday night,
Bob feels God is pleased, so he'll preach with all his might.
He returns the many calls, from several souls each week,
Reminders, suggestions, appointments, and some financial pleas.

On Tuesday and on Friday, Bob’s in the office, most of the day,

Church business and Bible study, and spending time to pray.

His Bible he reads daily, two hours spent, or more,

And works also on a message, three more hours, maybe four.

He’s well read in the Bible, for Bob was called to preach,

To those in need of Jesus, and those he needs to teach.
Five decades now with Jesus, the Gospel must be heard,

Oppression’s not a stranger, but his pledge to God is to serve.

But sometimes, we know Bob’s lazy, almost two hours he took for lunch.

Perhaps we should start tracking him, or get a time clock that he can punch.
He has another funeral, and just this month, makes four.

So many people passing on, Bob doesn’t think that it’s a chore.

Men’s meetings and church events, more than twice a month.

Bob will go, when ere’ he’s called, yes even for a brunch,
with a man who’s down and hurting, his life’s been torn apart,

'Perhaps a verse from God’s word', will mend or heal his heart.

But still, we know Bob’s lazy, so we try to hold his nose,

to the grindstone of church business, as some of us oppose,
not seeing him in labor, and accounting for all of his time,

After all, the church does pay him, so “he’s working on our dime”.

Though most of us don’t visit, that’s Pastor Bob’s career.

We may call on one at times, if the individual lives near.
Still the preacher needs to learn his job, and to get on, a routine,

Perhaps we’ll cure Bob’s slothful ways, or we may have to convene.

So let’s add it up, and then keep track, of his time, oh yes, indeed,

For our membership’s not growing, and this we all agree,
And let’s quietly, not make a fuss, and form a committee for a search,

To satisfy, the people, and maybe save our little church.

A new Pastor, young and healthy, train him right, at half the pay,

There’s hundreds of new prospects, many seminary trained.
And we’ll buy a stack of time cards, and keep a watchful check,

We’ll know that he’s not lazy, if he’ll jump and step and fetch.

* I have known a lot of pastors (and yes, even us supply preachers) in my day and most of them work harder than anyone can  imagine.  Just preparing 3 messages per week involves several hours work.

“And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”

(Rom 10:15).

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
