“After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.” (1 Sam 24:14).

The Oxford Dictionary’s definition for Insignificant is: ‘having little or no importance or value’.

King Saul pursued after David to destroy him - to kill him out of jealousy. David’s response when being pursued by Saul in such a voracious way as to kill him was to compare himself to a dead dog, or even a tiny insignificant flea. He had been trapped in a cave surrounded by Saul’s army and the once a humble shepherd boy secretly cut off a piece of Saul’s garment. That had to be embarrassing for this powerful king. David wanted to let Saul know how insignificant he was to the king so he might spare his life.

Yesterday I was viewing a map program that showed the properties of everyone in the U.S. I was amazed at how this country of 335 million people is diced up into millions of acres of land, many in tiny plots as little as 1/16th of an acre (50' x 50') and even less.  In that respect, how insignificant we are, living in our tiny communes within a country. There are 7.9 billion folks in the world and the U.S. accounts for only 4.7% according to www.worldometers.info/world-population. The population has more than tripled since I was a child. I never even heard the word “billion” while growing up.  So in size and stature, we are very insignificant.

With all that said, there is a God in heaven who knows every star in the sky. Even with all of our most powerful telescopes and satellites, we cannot number the stars.  But God knows. Jesus Christ, the Creator of all knows the number, and even the names of each star. “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names” (Ps 147:4).  He also knows the names of every human that was ever born on this earth, and that includes the unborn children. Especially those children that are murdered. So if we have a Lord who remembers every star, He certainly knows every human being on the planet - alive and deceased. And Jesus tells us that we are of value to Him - great Value. “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows” (Matt 10:29-31).

So you see, we are very significant to Jesus Christ.  Very Important. Think about this if you will.  Jesus’ love for each of us is so great, that He presented Himself as a sacrifice for our sins (John 3:16) so that we might be in heaven with Him, if we receive His gift (John 1:12). “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened (made alive) us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Eph 2:4-5)Now that is significant!   Significantly Important!

So the Oxford’s Dictionary writers don't really know the rest of the story, do they?

Have you received His great gift of salvation yet? If so, praise God.

If not, Jesus is waiting. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Rev 3:20).

FRIEND, DON'T WAIT.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom 10:9).
