It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: (Pro 31:4).

 Definitions:

Disease: noun; a condition of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms [Merriam-Webster ]

Sin: noun; 1 an offense against religious or moral law. 2. An action that is or is felt to be highly reprehensible. 3. An often serious shortcoming. 4. Transgression of the law of God. [Merriam-Webster ]

Drunk driving alone took the lives of 13,384 people in 2021**.  More in 2022.  All of these deaths were preventable.  Drugs are included. This figure does not include the thousands that die each day from alcohol related so-called diseases like liver, heart, kidney failure, diabetes, accidents while intoxicated at home or work, etc.

Let's look at three verses from God’s word, the Holy Bible:

• It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Pro 31:4

• Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Pro 20:1

• Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. Pro 22:31

[And for some who justify they're alcohol consumption with the verse in 1 Tim 5:23 / As Bible students we understand the writer is speaking about medicine for an illnesses ]***

Booze is not for Believers.

As believers, we must understand this: Alcohol is a Sin and Not a disease:

Cancer, Polio, Typhus, MS, Cerebral Palsy, Scarlet Fever, Meningitis, and other diseases do not cause people to act irrationally, cause memory loss, and to lose one’s coordination. This so called “disease” is responsible for most divorces, most domestic violence, auto crashes, child abuse, and more.

If Alcohol were a disease;

• It is the only disease where taxes are collected and used by local, state and federal governments.

• It is the only disease that is advertised on television, sporting events and in magazines that entices people to purchase it.

• It is the only disease that is bottled, sold and licensed by the government.

• It is the only disease where by the use of one can possibly go out & rob, murder & assault.

It is the only disease that can bar a person from heaven (1 Cor 6:10).

“. . . ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!” (Luke 7:34b)The Pharisees claimed this, not Jesus. Our Lord and Savior did not drink alcoholic beverages, otherwise, Proverbs 31:4 would be null and void. And since we are the children of God (John 1:12), we are princes and princesses.   So based on just the above three verses, you make the decision.

One more item:  The Bible says that we are not even to keep company with those calling themselves brethren, who are drunkards (1 Cor 5:11).

I know this for a fact, a small portion of my life was destroyed by the sin, alcohol BUT: “one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see”   (John 9:25b). Praise Jesus !

***  a. Use a little wine for your stomach’s sake: Water in the ancient world was often impure and Timothy probably had problems from the impure water. Since the fermentation process would eliminate some of the harmful things in the water, it would be better for him to drink a little wine rather than water all the time.
