Environmentalist “Doom-and-Gloom” Predictions Haven’t Come True

Ideas regarding climate change and other environmental concerns are constantly in the news. Now, as Christians, we have a reason to care for the earth—God has set us as stewards and we need to care for the planet, just as He does. But that doesn’t mean we should just indiscriminately buy into every alarmist and dire claim made by radical environmentalists. And a recent article highlights one of the reasons why—many of the “gloomy predictions” of the past just haven’t come to pass.

Science Confirms The Bible

This article starts by saying we should have been thankful this Earth Day (April 22) because the “gloom-and-doom predictions made throughout the past several decades haven’t come true.” For example, in the 1970s the concern was global cooling, then it switched to global warming, and now it’s just climate change. This is because what you believe about climate change is based on your worldview and what you believe about the past.

The article gives one reason why many of the gloomy

environmentalist predictions haven’t come true:

The issue, however, is that present trends do not continue. They change dramatically for a number of reasons. Innovation happens. Consumer behavior changes.

Here’s another reason—one that we can take to the bank because

it comes from God’s infallible Word:

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22)

WE SHOULD CARE FOR CREATION AND RATIONALLY ADDRESS REAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS, BUT LET’S NOT GET SWEPT AWAY IN “DOOM-AND-GLOOM” PREDICTIONS

Now, this doesn’t mean we can do whatever we want to the earth. We need to be good stewards of what God has created and care for our planet. Christians should be leading the way in environmental care because we understand the dominion mandate (Genesis 1:28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. But we should always do so recognizing ultimately God, not us, is in control and humans are of infinitely more value than the rest of creation because we are made in God’s image (Gen 1:27) and have eternal souls.

Absolutely, we should care for creation and rationally address real environmental concerns, but let’s not get swept away in “doom-and-gloom” predictions.

Let’s responsibly use the creation for man’s good and God’s glory.
